National Research University “Higher School of Economics” (“HSE”) in Saint-Petersburg conducts the I Kotchoubey Readings “Private Collections in Russia and in the World – Experience of Interaction with Society and State” in terms of the VII Saint-Petersburg Cultural Forum under the patronage of the Kotchoubey family in the year of the 150th anniversary of Vasiliy Kotchoubey who was the owner of Tsarskoye Selo mansion where Kotchoubey Centre is situated.

The conference is designed as a platform for wide international experience and opinion exchange in regards to assembling and preserving private collections. During the conference international experience of creation, preservation and representation of private collections will be introduced in the context of efforts by society and state directed at keeping historical and cultural heritage intact.

The main question which will be placed for discussion is ‘which role can (and should) private initiative play in preserving and comprehending our heritage? How can the interests of state, society and private collectors be harmonised? How and under what circumstances do private collections develop in socially meaningful institution without losing their private character?
